Perfect Toners and Tips for a Perfect Complexion

I recently posted a beauty tip on Krystie Ann Hair + Makeup, and received a handful of messages on recommendations for products for toners.

First things first. What exactly is a pimple?
We hate them. They usually appear on important events. First dates, job interviews, wedding days....

A pimple is a form of acne. When dead skin and excess oil get trapped in your pores, pimples form.

Inside your pores are sebaceous glands which produce sebum. (Sebum lubricates and waterproofs the skin.) When the outer layers of your skin shed, the dead skin cells left behind may become "glued" together by the sebum. This creates the blocked pore. The sebaceous glands produce more sebum which builds up behind the blockage, the sebum harbors various bacteria which causes inflammation and infection. A Pimple.

Next, why is your skin oily? Now I mentioned that the sebum or "oil" that your skin produces helps keep your skin hydrated. But if you find you are oilier than normal, you may have over productive sebaceous glands. Whats to blame? Genetics.
Oily complexions are largely hereditary. I can thank my pops for my oily complexion. :)
Excess oil can also be the result of increased hormone levels. Think back to your teenage years. This can also be the reason why some pregnant women or menopausal women have oilier skin, or even during your menstrual cycle.

Now you cant stop the production of sebum, but you can try and control it. With some of these tips!

Eat more vitamin A.
Dark green veggies, (kale, broccoli  spinach) orange produce, (carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe)

Zinc. (Oysters, low fat roast beef, lamb and crab - 3 ounces at a meal is perfect. Also, wheat germ, pumpkin/sunflower seeds, dark chocolate)

The following toners can be helpful also with helping to control that midday shine.

Zero Oil
Pore Purifying Toner

Clear Complexion Tonic
With Botanical Blast

Tone it True
Matifying Lotion

Intensive Pore Minimizer

Hope these tips help keep that T zone in check!

SPRAY it don't BAKE it. Dangers of tanning beds.

I used to frequent the tanning bed quite often when I was a young'n. I found it really helped reduce the appearance of my acne scaring. BUT now, I truly know how damaging they are. I have been through so many awful experiences with friends, bad burns, and skin cancer scares. It is just not worth it.

That's why I started offering spray tanning. I know how rockin' an awesome tan can really boost your confidence. It improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks, highlights muscle tone and helps give you a leaner look, you look well rested and refreshed, your teeth look whiter....I could go on and on. And I give my clients those results in under 15 minutes with a SPRAY TAN and its INSTANT.

I also wanted to share the true dangers of tanning beds. You hear people say  things like, "its nice to have that 20 minutes of relaxation in the tanning bed.” Or  “Its warm and its like a little getaway." Or, "Its a good source of Vitamin D. I always feel better after having a tan." Well- here is a good suggestion, Try yoga or meditating. That's a nice 20 min breather to yourself. Or take some vitamin D supplements, take a walk outside, it may be cold right now, but its totally worth it rather than experiencing this.....

See those goggle marks around her eyes? They’re a dead giveaway of a tanning-bed baker. If she had skipped the fryer, her whole face would be as clear of damage as those reverse raccoon eyes are! Regular use of tanning beds escalates sun damage big time. It actually quadruples the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, according to a study from the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center and School of Public Health. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an affiliate of the World Health Organization, lists ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices among the most dangerous cancer-causing substances. Feeling guilty about having tanned back in the day? Don’t worry too much. The risk of melanoma depends more on how much a person tans than on their age.”

Canadian Cancer Society: Canadian CancerStatistics 2012 stated an estimated 970 deaths to skin cancer. Despite this fact, hundreds of thousands of people routinely visit tanning salons.
Are tanning booths less dangerous than tans from the sun? The fact is that the UVA rays that are emitted from the Ultraviolet A light sources in tanning salons are two to three times more powerful than the UVA rays which occur naturally from the sun.

What are the long-term effects of UV exposure?

Over time, the effects of too much UVA exposure can lead to eye damage, immune system changes, cataracts, wrinkles and premature aging of the skin, and skin cancers. Look at your own skin and compare areas such as the front of your hands and your face to areas that are almost never exposed to solar radiation. The difference in skin texture, tone, wrinkles, ect. that you see are caused by exposure to the sun.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and approximately 90% of all skin cancers can be traced to UV exposure. Skin cancer most often occurs on the face, and almost never on the buttocks, inner thighs, or under the arms. The three main types of skin cancer are melanoma, basal-cell carcinoma, and squamous-cell carcinoma. Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and its incidence is rapidly rising in men and women under 40.

Warning Signs of Skin Cancer

As with many cancers, early detection and treatment offers your best chance of remission and survival. Here are some signs that may indicate skin cancer:

§        A skin abnormality that increases in size and appears multicolored, pink, red, black, brown, tan, pearly, translucent, or tan.

§        A mole that changes color, textures, grows, becomes irregular in shape, or that is bigger than a pencil eraser.

§        A spot or growth that continually itches, hurts, becomes crusty, scabs, or bleeds.

§        An open sore that does not heal after 4 weeks or one that heals and reopens.

Anytime you are concerned about a growth or spot on your skin, it is best to seek the advice of your physician.

Protecting Your Skin

Most of us know the importance of using a sunscreen to help prevent damaging rays from penetrating our skin. Using the proper SPF for your skin type and circumstances may lower your risk of skin cancer, however sunscreens will not undo damage that has already been done to your skin.

Those who seek their tans from tanning salons should be aware of recent research classifying tanning booths as a known carcinogen and keep these points in mind:

§         Those who burn easily or never tan in the sun should not use tanning salons.
§         Check with your pharmacist for possible drug interactions.
§         UV radiation can aggravate cold sores in people who are prone to them.
§        Always use the protective goggles which should be available at the tanning salon. Your eyes can be severely burned by the intense UV rays emitted by the light source.

Whiten your teeth - the natural way!

Are your pearly whites lookin’ a little more on the yellow side?
Whitening toothpaste and strips totally work, but can create teeth sensitivity. Here are some tips on how you can naturally achieve a glorious mouth that belongs on a toothpaste commercial!

Crunchy and crispy fruits and veggies

Foods like apples, carrots, and celery taste delicious, but also have a gentle abrasiveness that help lift stains from teeth.
They also help your mouth to produce more saliva. This is a good thing! Saliva contains compounds and enzymes that give it detergent properties which help protect teeth from cavity-causing bacteria.

Baking Soda

Helps remove surface stains, and if you squeeze a couple drops of lemon juice with it this will create a bleaching effect.
This solution can be harsh on your teeth. So no more than once per week. And make sure you do not leave the mixture on your teeth for longer than a minute.

Strawberries

The vitamin C in strawberries help remove plaque build up. They also contain malic acid, a natural astringent which helps remove surface stains.
Crush up some strawberries and apply to your teeth with a toothbrush. You can add a bit of baking soda as well if you wish. Allow that mix to it to sit on your teeth for 3-5 minutes and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.

Avoid things like tea, coffee, red wines which stain your teeth. Drink plenty of water and brush and floss regularly. for perfectly pearly whites! J

Also WBB TIP - wearing darker shades of lip colours, bold reds and rich berry shades will give the illusion of a whiter smile ;)

How To: Keep your lipstick from fading

Here are some simple steps to keep your favourite lipstick from fading on a night out, or during a special event.

Photo: Samantha Erin Photography Hair + Makeup: KrystieAnn
Make sure your lips are soft and smooth! Exfoliate your lips using a lip scrub. I prefer a homemade scrub of honey and brownsugar. J Use a soft bristle toothbrush to help scrub away any dead skin.
Make sure you keep a lip moisturizer on your lips when you sleep too for extra hydration!

Lip primer is the perfect tool for helping lip colour stay in place. It also helps minimize the appearance of fine lines in the lips, for an even application. Urban Decay makes one of my favourite lip primers.

Next, apply a foundation over your lips and set with a loose or pressed powder.

Then outline your lips with a lipliner. I prefer to use the side of the lip pencil rather than the point. It creates a softer lip line, and is much easier to blend.
Match your liner with your lipstick if you have a bold colour. But if your lipstick is a natural more flesh-toned pink, then use a natural colour that matches your lips. Another great trick is to use a clear, or nude shade. DuWop and CARGO cosmetics both make a “reverse lip liner” which is fantastic to use. These pencils are mostly wax, and also help give the illusion of a fuller pout.

Then apply your lipstick. The creamier or more sheer your lipstick, the more chance you have it fading. Stick with a matte lipstick for the best staying power. The trick is to saturate your lips but not to add a super thick layer of lipstick.
-On myself, I use my index finger and tap the product into my lips. I find I get the perfect amount of colour and you can easily layer it on if need be.

Next blot your lips on a tissue, and set your lips with a translucent powder. This will allow your lipstick to adhere to a dry base. If you want, you can add another layer or lipstick and set again for extra staying power. And voila! Pucker up!

How To: Get Rid of Puffy Eyes

AHHHH!!!! You've woken up and can barely see through your puffy eyes. Long night of crying? drinking? Baby keeping you up? Or just literally NO sleep?

Consuming too much alcohol dehydrates the body and can lead to puffy eyes. As well as crying – the salt in your tears, retains water. Not to mention the pressure your poor eyes go through with loud sobs. Even eating salty foods can cause puffy eyes.

Here are some simple solutions to help get rid of those puffy eyes, and get those peepers back to normal!

Chilled Tea Bags
After you have brewed your morning tea, place the tea bags on a plate in the fridge to cool down. Place the chilled tea bags on your eyes for about 10-15 minutes. Caffeine draws water away from the skin for creating a tighter appearance.

Chilled Sliced Cucumbers
Place sliced cucumbers over your closed eyes and let this delicious veggie do its work. The coolness combined with the hydration from the cucumber will help minimize any puffiness.

Witch Hazel
A natural skin tightening astringent. Apply two cotton pads soaked in cold witch hazel to your eyes for about 5 minutes.

Chilled Spoons
Place two pre chilled spoons for 5 or 10 minutes on your eyes to help relieve any swelling.

Using eye creams with caffeine and antioxidants help to tighten skin. And products with chamomile as an ingredient in them helps calm inflammation.

So cut back on the salty foods, and booze and make sure to drink plenty of H2O to help reduce puffy eyes. Especially before a special event!

Fall Hair Trends!

There is just something I LOVE about fall fashion and beauty. Don't get me wrong, Im a big fan of the carefree days of summer. But it's nice to push the effortless beauty trends of summer aside and get into more polished looks for fall.

Here are some of the hottest hair trends for fall 2012....

Pony Tails

No not gym hair pony. No, not sweaty bangs and a hot mess of a pony.  It's all about chic, classic red carpet pony tails. Hot off a runway.

Bangs

Bangs make almost any hair style look sexy to me. They really accentuate the eyes and make them pop. Whether you are rockin’ a full, square bang, swept off to the side, or long and whispy, bangs are a hot hair accessory.

Bouffants

This fab retro hair style is hot for fall. Think Bridget Bardot and Sophia Loren. Big hair is back. Break out the teasing combs and hair spray.

Twists

Add a bohemian, creative look to almost any hair style. Can give a simple hair style the oomph that it needs to take it from drab to fab in seconds.

Pixie Cut
Super short = super cute + super sexy.
With stars like Rhianna and Anne Hathaway snippin’ their strands, this is a trendy hair cut for the fall

High Bun
Super chic and sassy. LOVE this look for a sexy girls night out, or a classic wedding updo. Its simply fabulous.

How To: Tousled, Beach Hair

This is a simple and care-free hair style, that still leaves you looking super fab and super sexy.
Perfect if you have a limited time to get glamorous in the morning, or before a special night out.

Note- This style will be harder to achieve if your hair is all one length and you have no layers in it. Having all that bulk at the end of your hair weighs it down and will just pull out the style naturally.

Step 1.
Start with towel dried hair. NOT soaking wet hair. The best is to leave your hair up in the towel while you get dressed, do your makeup or have breakfast in the morning.

Step 2.
Apply a quarter size amount of a styling cream (Bumble and Bumble Crème, L’oreal Pearl Whip Pearl Whip, OR KMS Silk Sheen Silk Sheen Crème are great options) scrunching the product in, mid shaft to ends. Work in small sections to get the most even coverage. You can twist some sections for more texture. Adding a light spray of sea salt spray (Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, OR KMS Sea Salt Spray Sea Salt Spray are great products)  all over will help to also add more texture in the hair for that true beachy look.

Step 3.
For added volume, use your blow dryer and lightly dry your hair, while scrunching your ends. Flip your head and dry your hair for added volume at your root.

Step 4.
To finish, use an anti frizz hair spray to hold your style for the day.

Your products are very important in achieving this look. Salon quality PROFESSIONAL products will truly help you achieve the perfect beach look.

I always say, you can buy cheap hair products from the drugstore, and yes it might do the trick for a little while, but the professional quality products will really deliver. And you will have more staying power! Its like your car. You can drive a Honda. Great car, it will get you from point A to B no problem. But wouldn't you rather drive an Audi or BMW with all the bells and whistles?

Think about it with your hair and makeup products. Do you want a Honda on your head or a BMW? ;)

You can sleep with this look, and the following day touch up your waves with a curl stick for a more defined look!

(Another easy way to achieve this look: Shower before before bed, very loosely braid towel dried hair, apply some of the styling cream in your hair to keep your hair from frizzing over night. When you take the braids out in the morning, lightly spray some sea salt spray into your hair just a light mist and scrunch your ends)

Feel free to email me your pics if you try this look!!! I would love to share with my readers! :)
